The sea brought threats, but also opportunities for Zeeland. Shipbuilding, pilotage and fishing are still an important source of income for the people of Zeeland. Discover the rich maritime history of Zeeland in the MuZEEum. Shipping has always made an important contribution to the existence of the city of Vlissingen. The dry docks, workshops and cranes of shipyard De Schelde dominated the city silhouette for years. Ships with names like the 'Willem Ruys' were launched here with great interest. The Shipbuilding History Foundation now offers guided tours of the former Scheldt site. With old film images and photos they take you to the heyday of the shipyard.
You will be welcomed with a cup of coffee / tea and a delicacy of Zeeland. Afterwards, you walk on your own to the nearby MuZEEum.
You will visit the Zeeland maritime MuZEEum with an experienced guide. The muZEEum is located in a complex of monuments and new construction with a unique view of shipping on the Westerschelde. You can see, hear, discover and experience the rich maritime history of Zeeland in four themes: Water, Work, Glory and Adventure. There are exhibitions around Michiel de Ruyter almost all year round. As a visitor to the MuZEEum you have free entrance to the Kazematten.
It's time for a delicious lunch, consisting of: cup of soup, a bolus or a luxury coffee sandwich, various breads, various meats, cheese, sweet fillings, croquette and unlimited coffee / tea.
Shipping has made a very important contribution to the 7 centuries of the city of Vlissingen. A lot of prosperity (VOC / WIC), but also many lows were due or attributable to the developments in shipping. Names such as De Ruyter, Evertsen, Banckert and Naerebout are prominent in many history books. Logically, the building of ships also took place in Vlissingen. Many shipyards were located in and around port works. This guided tour, includes images and sound as seen and heard at the time of active business operations. The guides are supported by the former Schelde company car the Spijkstaal, which is equipped with a screen with photo and film material. During the tour, a visit is made to the Machinefabriek and the Timmerfabriek.
